The idea behind the new park is to create a facility which will be attractive to all residents in the community and to encourage outdoor activity.

In May 2007 TRAG consulted the Parks Department about bringing the “Cemaes Park” area up to a standard that the Council Promotes in their “Vision of Cardiff”, that is all children have the right to access safe areas to play close to their homes, and after many “Council consultations” But still, or children have been deprived of play areas/facilities for over 13 years, now!.

The people of Trowbridge have had a bitter experience with the “Council Consultations” and promises ,that are made what they mean (this is in reference to our Community Centre, and look what happened regarding those) .

Subsequent to these meetings. we were told by the Council, that the only way forward was to form a “Friends Association” and part of this approach would required TRAG to become a “Registered Charity”, this would enable TRAG the opportunity to find outside agencies to help fund the required changes, (this is now more important than ever because of the increasing restraints on the Councils own resources)

As part of the proposed redevelopment of “Cemaes Park”, these are some of the proposals that our members have suggested over the last 30 Months or so:-

• To drain the land and allow it to be useable most of the year. (The reens mentioned below could assist with drainage).

• To establish a children’s / Adult exercise area with (including swings and roundabouts etc.) and maintained to the Health and Safety requirements

• The provision of a fenced multi-use, all weather surface area, with lighting.

(All types of sport activities)

• Build a ”MUGA” the same size as those units attached to “Oakfield and Meadowland schools” with lighting

• Establish a Skate board ramp facility.

• A nature trail extending from “Cemaes park” area behind the School playing fields to the end of the playing fields of Coleg Glan Hafren / Trowbridge Road. As outlined below.

• Quiet family areas, where parents can sit and watch their children play.

• With boundary’s constructed out of natural sources (Blackthorn)

• Possible Football Pitch

The FRIENDS OF “CEMAES PARK” ASSOCIATION wishes to help create a nature/wet-land trail, through the park, behind and adjacent to the local schools. This would give the schools access to a nature area that could assist the delivery of the national curriculum. We have explained our vision to the heads of our local Schools and they are enthusiastically supportive so we should be able to encourage school children to help develop the site.

The FRIENDS OF “CEMAES PARK” ASSOCIATION envisages the planting of. Wildflowers (such as milkmaids, thistles, primroses, clover, buttercups and bluebells) and native tree species, already adapted to local conditions, would result in woodland of local provenance. True native trees are mainly broad-leaved and deciduous species (Such as birch, oak, ash and willow) but include ever-greens (such as holly, yew, Scots pine and juniper).

The creation of a “Wetland” area: Trowbridge is built on what is commonly known as the “Wentloog Levels” by land reclamation: a major transformation of the natural environment, involving the construction of the sea-wall along the coast to keep tidal waters out and a system of drainage ditches (known locally as reens), cut into the surface of the former salt marsh to lower the water table by removing surface water run-off from the surrounding hills. The land created is suitable for grazing and the growing of some crops.

By using the existing reen and introducing marsh plants (such as bulrush), and water plants (such as frog bit), we can create an environment that is attractive to a range of wildlife, including birds, insects, amphibians, reptiles and mammals (many of these can already be found living locally on land which is ear-marked by the Council for housing development). The nature Trail was first brought forward 9 years ago by Councillor Ralph Cook. but circumstances made it difficult to pursue then

We appreciate that above project may be beyond the budget of Cardiff City Council £70,000 secured funding from the Developers Section 106 with monies being sought from “the Big Lottery” but by working in partnership with Cardiff City Parks, and other interested groups, we think they can be achieved Being a registered Charity, we can now start to approach the many organisations that offer grants to such groups as ours to support the plans being prepared by the Council. This project will take a few years to complete,

We are pleased to say that the Council’s latest survey supports the above, The Council identified an area to consult in, these involved a door to door interview, this method identified 132 residents were identified in this area 21 door to door surveys were completed. Of the 775 postal surveys delivered 119 postal surveys were returned:-

Sustainability. This is a major consideration, with ever more pressure being placed on Cardiff City Councils Budgets, and the short term Funding Principles of the Welsh Assembly Government. The “Cemaes Park Friends Association” will have to become pro-active in finding funding from other funding sources, with sustainability a fundamental .requirement to ensure”Cemaes Park” becomes an asset to the people of Trowbridge now and in the future.
