Land is essential to most rural livelihoods, but it is also bound up very strongly with issues of “identity and power”. In this respect ountry Houses and Gardens are indicators of past relationships between culture and nature which in early times was brought into a family as a marriage dowry (e.g. the South Wales mineral and urban estates of the Crichton Stuarts of Cardiff the and Morgans of Newport) and in later times it was created from entrepreneurial profits of the first indstrialists (e.g. Cyfartha Castle of the Crawshays, and Duffryn house and gardens of the Corys).
