A national historic an artistic heritage, this complex architecture work by Oscar Niemeyer was inaugurated in 1967, after twelve years of construction. It is considered a landmark in the history of Brazilian architecture and enginnering. The walls have acoustic vibration, which means that the priest does not need a microphone during the celebration of masses, since he can be heard from anywhere inside the Cathedral. Take the test: stand close to the wall and ask someone to stand at any other space in the nave. When you speak in your normal tone of voice, the other person will herar you within 2 seconds.

The main nave is on the underground level. The access to it is through an underground dark tunnel passage with black floor and walls, an allusion to the Roman catacombs of early Christianity, ending at
a meditation zone. After completing the path, one sees the nave, lit by natural light filtered by the stained glass windows of Marianne Peretti, reflecting on the white marble walls. The dark passage and the light nave are clear references to purgatory and heaven. Pay attention to some elements at the main nave: the egg representing life; the blue color, the uterus, the angels, diagonally arranged as if they were flying, represent those of the Annunciation. The concrete curved pillars joining at the apex will remind you of Christ's crown.
The Cathedral also houses significant works of art: bronze sculptures of the four evangelists (Luke, Mathew, Mark and John), paintings by Di Cavalcanti and the only official replica of the Pieta. At the outside patio, next to the cathedral, a concrete tower houses four bronze bells, fabricated in Zaragoza, Spain, weighing from 0.7 to 4 tons. They were inaugurated in 1977 and first designated Santa Maria, Pinta, Nina and Pilarca (the first three named after Christopher Columubus' ships and caravels) and later renamed Our Lady Aparecida, Porto Seguro, Our Lady of Santana and Our Lady of the Pillar*.
