History:

The Union County Vocational Technical School rain garden was installed as part of the Landscaper Training program that targeted landscapers in North Jersey. The Landscaper Training program was funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service National Integrated Water Quality Program under agreement number 2007-51130-03878.

Type of Runoff Managed:

This rain garden manages stormwater from the Union County Vocational Technical School's parking lot.

Installation:

Approximately forty North Jersey Landscapers were present for the installation of the rain garden in March 2008, which was approved by the Business Administrator of the Union County Vocational Technical School. In addition to the landscapers, Bonnie Baldesare, the Union County Vocational Technical School horticulture instructor, volunteered her time to help with the installation of the rain garden. The Union County Department of Public Works and Union County Vocational Technical School Maintenance Department donated their time to help with the rain garden installation. Futurescape, Inc. donated the use of their Bobcat for the rain garden excavation.

Maintenance:

The rain garden is maintained by the Union County Vocational Technical School horticulture students and the Union County Future Farmers of America (FFA)organization.
