Clarke University is a 4 year coeducational university established in 1843. It is named for an Irish woman, Mary Frances Clarke, who founded a congregation of religious women, the Sisters of Charity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (BVMs). Its 55-acre campus sits on a bluff in a quiet residential area overlooking the city of Dubuque and the Mississippi River.
