In 1988, the Salvo Post Office tied for first place in the "Smallest Post Office Challenge." This historic building is owned by Edward Hooper, who was the Salvo postmaster for almost 50 years. The building with first postmaster Kenneth R. Pugh was originally at the mail landing. It was subsequently moved closer to the road at the south end of the village when Melvina Whedbee became postmistress. The buliding was moved to its current location when Edward Hooper became postmaster. The original building was mostly destroyed by fire in 1992. Members of the community rebuilt the historic structure. Salvo Post Office was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 23, 1993.
