One of the most beautiful natural settings in Johannesburg, Melville Koppies covers 150 hectares across wild, rocky koppies covered with indigenous fauna and flora. In the spring, delicate wild flowers bloom, and in winter the highveld grasses are prominent.

From the height of these rocky outcroppings, the skyline of Johannesburg can be viewed in all directions. Trails run throughout the area. It is also the site of an ancient Iron Age furnace, and many schools hold useful on educational trips through the reserve. On Sundays, the west koppies are home to African church groups, whose singing and drumming can be heard in the distance from neighbouring suburbs.

With its delicate ecosystem of indigenous plants, the koppies are suitable for photography and limited small corporate events.
