Nikki loves nothing better than running seeds through her fingers and splashing in grassland streams. She lives in a Magic Cottage near the mist-belt forest with her African dog, Dizzy. They enjoy long walks in the fields to gather wild greens, sitting on the verandah with a pot of tea, and harvesting vegetables outside the kitchen door.

Nikki hosts thought-provoking film evenings and has convinced many of her neighbours that it is necessary to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and the industrial food chain and many residents are committed to living as locally as possible. "We plan to respond proactively to peak oil and climate change, and begin to build a better, low-carbon and more sustainable future for our community." And thus, the Dargle Market and Dargle local Living was founded. Nikki takes the idea of locavore to the next level, believing it is critical to create a resilient community that can look after itself. Dargle is a little place, but their market showcases only Dargle produce. “People from neighbouring areas keep asking if they can join the market but we want to keep it local, so I ask them “do you think you live in Dargle?” because if they do, then they can come, but if not, then we won’t be true to ourselves,” says Nikki.

She is a Freelance Journalist who posts relevant and inspiring stories onto numerous Blogs including the Midlands Conservancies Forum, Dargle Local Living, River Walks, Plant Abundance, Verdant Life | KZN Midlands Sustainability Forum and she also uses her local media connections to publicise ‘green’ issues in and around the KZN Midlands.
