History:

The Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds rain garden was installed as part of the Landscaper Training program that targeted landscapers in South Jersey. The Landscaper Training program was funded by the United States Department of Agriculture Cooperative State Research Education and Extension Service National Integrated Water Quality Program under agreement number 2007-51130-03878.

Type of Runoff Managed:

This rain garden manages stormwater from the Gloucester County 4-H Fairgrounds lawn area and the from the concession stand building via a downspout that is directed underground into the rain garden. Before the rain garden was installed, a drainage swale received most of the runoff from the 4-H Fairgrounds. The swale conveys water into a nearby forest. Maintenance of the swale was difficult because of frequent standing water, which was also an issue for events held at the 4-H Fairgrounds.

Installation:

Approximately forty-five South Jersey Landscapers were present for the installation of the rain garden in March 2008, which was approved by the Gloucester County Fair Association. In addition to the landscapers, Rutgers Cooperative Extension faculty, staff and Master Gardeners volunteered their time to help with the installation of the rain garden. The Gloucester County Fair Association provided in-kind assistance with excavation and donated the mulch, stone, and fence for the rain garden. The rain garden is situated along the side of the existing swale. Overflow from the rain garden will be handled by the existing swale during large storm events.

Plant List:

Arrowwood Viburnum
Blue Flagstem
Blue Flag Iris
Cardinal Flower
Inkberry Holly
Red Chokeberry
Soft Rush
Swamp Milkweed
Swamp Rose
Sweet Pepperbush/Summersweet

Maintenance:

The rain garden is maintained by the Master Gardeners of Gloucester County.
