The Penllergare Trust was formed in 2000 to save this “secret and magical place” for the benefit of the public. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Penllergare Estate was an outstanding example of a picturesque romantic landscape, created in the main by John Dillwyn Llewelyn (1810-82). The park contained a rich variety of trees, shrubs and exotic plants, a mansion house (since replaced by the Civic Centre), an observatory and an orchid house. Today only remnants of these famous gardens are visible through the dense undergrowth since the Penllergare Estate gradually became derelict after World War II. However, the beauty and tranquillity of old Penllergare still remains in this secluded wooded valley, which is gradually being opened up and regenerated.

You can visit the place and find out for yourself just how beautiful it is. There is a program of events at Penllergare Valley Woods, including guided walks, and schools activities. The Trust can also arrange illustrated talks about the project, the historical importance of the estate (showing photographs, some taken by John Dillwyn Llewelyn himself) and the plans for its future protection and conservation.

Walks: The Penllergare Trust has produced some useful leaflets detailing walks. The Terrace Garden Walk makes a 1¼ mile (2km) circuit of the upper valley through woodlands within which the remnants of John Dillwyn Llewelyn’s gardens are being gradually revealed . The Coed Nydfwch Walk is a 2½ mile (4km) circuit of the former wooded parkland, including the river and re-modelled lake with extensive views out. Although the land is now part of Penllergare a large area once belonged to Nydfach – the adjoining estate.

an absolutely wonderful place to walk especially if you have dogs.as someone who hated walking ,since disovering the valley i usually walk roughly 3 miles a day with the dogs.various routes will allow you so see different things, but walking next to the river is my favourite.a lot of work is being undertaken lately,to clear some of the areas from overgrowth, and hopefully return it to some of its former glory.a massive thankyou to all involved........from mike, emma, the girls and the dogs.......
