This 25 thousand square meters mausoleum housing the mortal remains of former prsident Juscelino Kubitschek was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and inaugurated on September 12, 1981, the day of Juscelino’s birthday. The memorial is managed by the Kubitschek family and is the only monument in the city that charges a symbolic admission fee. It also features JK's photographs, medals and documents about the history of Brazil and houses an auditorium and a library with his personal collection of some three thousand books. The car involved in the crash that killed him in 1976 is also on display.

Highlights in the memorial inlcude the huge arraiolo rug ( traditional tapestry of his native state of Minas Gerais), the room housing his tomb, where a ornamental panel is engraved with one of his sayings: “Everything in this city is transformed into dawn which opens up to tomorrow”, and a statute of the former president saluting Brasilia on the top of a 28-meter-high pedestal.

Curious fact: The first mass ceremony in the city was celebrated at the memorial current site, in 1957.

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday: 9 am to 6pm
Admission: R$ 6 general admissiion; R$ 3 students and seniors.
