Buffelsdraai Landfill Site Community Reforestation Project
Overview
The project was initiated in 2008 as part of the "Greening Durban 2010 Programme" to offset the municipality's 2010 FIFA World Cup carbon footprint (307,000tCO2e). The reforestation occurs within the buffer zone of the Buffelsdraai Landfill site (and will result in the reforestation of ~521ha) creating employment and vocational training opportunites. Locally indigenous trees are sourced from adjacent communities using the "tree-preneur" model whereby community members collect seed and grow trees which are then traded for food, school fees, building materials, etc., resulting in social upliftment, mitigation and adaptation co-benefits in the most disadvantaged regions. The restoration of ecosystems services (e.g. improved water quality, reduced run-off and sediment loss provide downstream benefits for all users.
