Boat Building
Overview
A skiff is a small wooden boat with a flat bottom, a pointed bow and flat stern. Skiffs can be powered by oars, motors or sails. Skiffs are well-suited for navigating the sound-side waters of Ocracoke and were used for fishing, oystering, and local transportation. They are still used, although most are no longer constructed of wood, and skiffs can be seen coming and going in Silver Lake. Another example of a traditional island fishing boat is the Blanche, which can be found on display behind the Ocracoke Preservation Museum
