British Cemetary

Overview
The four British sailors buried here were crewmen aboard the HMT Bedfordshire, a British ship that patrolled the area between Cape Lookout and Norfolk during World War II. A German submarine attacked the Bedfordshire on May 11, 1942, and the bodies of these four British sailors were recovered off the coast of Ocracoke. Every year, on the Friday closest to May 11, the Coast Guard honors the British sailors who gave their lives helping their American allies.
