Traveling from Hatteras to Ocracoke by ferry is a wonderful experience and takes about 40 minutes. The ferry is first-come-first-served and the schedule changes during the year and can be viewed online. Waits can be long during peak hours during summer so plan accordingly (best time to leave is early in the morning or after sunset). Restrooms are available at both the terminal and on board, vending machine snacks are available in the terminal. Docking is at the north end of Ocracoke and the village of Ocracoke is about 14 miles down Route 12, passing 14 miles of beaches and sound-side views. This ferry is free, but if the weather is blowing a gale, call to see if the ferries are running.
