The Brooklyn Queens Expressway (BQE) is an expressway which runs from southern Brooklyn to the Grand Central Parkway in Queens. It is a portion of Interstate 278. Over 4 million cars run the expressway yearly, causing massive air pollution in Red Hook, Brooklyn. About 54-83% of Red Hook residents have reported cases of asthma. Such a high percentage of asthma cases in Red Hook is believed to be a direct result of the air pollution caused by the BQE. Other significant sources of air pollution in Red Hook include the excessive and illegal truck traffic, the Cruise Ship Terminal, factories, and a high concentration of waste transfer stations. Red Hook is in dire need of a current environmental impact study.
