The home of William Sidney Porter, or "O. Henry", was sold to the Conservation Society in 1959. The sale price of $1 included the responsibility to move the adobe house from its site at 904 South Presa Street within 60 days, as this was the only possible way to preserve this historically significant structure. Though many sites were considered (including adjacent to the German English School or to the Eager House), the grounds of Lone Star Brewery were selected, and the house was sold to the Brewery in 1960 for one dollar. Mary Friedrich Rogers and her husband Wallace Rogers purchased the house as a part of the Buckhorn Museum collection, when the Brewery closed. The Conservation Society was offered the building, but declined. In 1998 David Carter and the MLP Partnership purchased the O. Henry House. The historic structure was relocated from the old Lone Star Brewing Company site to the corner of Laredo and Dolorosa. In May of 1999 the restored O. Henry House was reopened to the public.
