Centro Cultural Gabriela Mistral (GAM) is a cultural center devoted to disseminate and promote performing art and music and its located in Santiago next to the main Avenue of Santiago (Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Avenue or also called “Alameda”). Drama, dance, photography, and popular arts are among the activities. With its 236,000 sq ft this massive cultural center is an interesting alternative to experience contemporary local art in Santiago. The building was originally constructed to host the third United Nations Conference on Trade and Development in 1972. After the conference the edifice was used as a cultural center until the 1973 coup d’etat. During Pinochet regime, the building hosted the Minister of National Defense. In 2006 a fire damaged an important part of the structure. However, it was remodeled to become from 2010, one of the largest performing art center in Santiago© and took the name of the Chilean Nobel price poet Gabriela Mistral.
