Tree Swallow Project
Overview
A bird in the box is worth two in the bush, Bronx high school students learned this spring.
"Teenagers from Arturo A. Schomburg Satellite Academy in Longwood worked with Rocking the Boat, a local nonprofit organization, to build nest boxes for tree swallows in Soundview Park.
They installed the wooden boxes in March and returned a month later to find swallow couples using the tiny homes. The birds are prodigious mosquito eaters but are rare in the Bronx because the small tree hollows where they prefer to nest are scarce.
"It made me happy to see the birds," said junior Alexandria Montero, 17. "I feel good that we built them somewhere to stay.""
