The Wildlife Trust named the reserve as a memorial to Col. Jo Hambury - the Glamorgan Trust’s founding Chairman. The area is characterised by ancient woodland, and birds such as Marsh Tit, Nuthatch, and Treecreeper have been recorded frequently, as well as Buzzards. The views of wintering wildfowl coming in to roost at high tide are spectacular. A memorial seat at the centre of the northern boundary of the wood offers fine views of Whiteford Point, the North Gower saltmarsh and Burry Estuary. Access improvements are currently in hand to make access easier for those with physical impairments.
Further Information
There are 47 local Wildlife Trusts across the whole of the UK, the Isle of Man & Alderney; they work for an environment rich in wildlife for everyone. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales is fourth largest in the UK, covering from Cardiff and Caerphilly in the east to Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire in the west, and include four of the west Wales islands amongst the 90 or so nature reserves.
Training and Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteers are an integral part of the structure and running of the Trust. Volunteers take part in activities within the Trust contributing skills, talents, experience and time, which often expand the skills-base of the Trust. They also help to contain costs, raise funds and help raise awareness with people through the local groups.
Volunteers can be any age and can be experienced or inexperienced. Whether you are looking for training and experience to pursue a career in conservation, looking to keep fit and meet new people in your spare time, or looking for a new challenge following retirement or during a career break, the Trust can offer you a range of opportunities!
