The Capital Area Food Bank Teaching Garden is a project to encourage our Partner Agencies such as food pantries, shelters, and soup kitchens to grow fresh, healthy food, and share their knowledge and bounty with the hungry. After a presentation on Square Foot Gardening, possibly the most economical and user-friendly garden method known, CAFB staffers realized, “Let’s build square foot garden beds and teach our Partner Agencies to build them too, enabling more people to have access to fresh produce!”

At the Food Bank we have 16 square foot beds totaling 256 square feet of soil for growing a variety of herbs and vegetables. We distribute the garden harvest to hungry Central Texans in our 21 county service area or use the produce for our CHOICES nutritional classes. The garden itself also serves as a teaching tool. In August and September of 2009, Citizen Gardener classes will be held at the CAFB Teaching Garden where Partner Agencies collaborating with local citizens can learn how to implement a local sustainable garden program.

If you want to get involved, we offer many volunteer opportunities at the Food Bank. In the garden, we welcome experienced and novice gardeners to provide advice on plant care and help with planting, watering, and harvesting.
