Develops technology to address problems faced by the Chesapeake Bay and the world's oceans.
Offers education outreach activities for schools and online.
Research ranges from the study of naturally occurring microbes that break
down PCBs to developing sustainable, low-impact aquaculture. The latter
includes a highly efficient recirculating technology that recycles water
in the fish tanks and requires almost no added water to maintain.
Combined with this is development of fish feeds that do not include
menhaden or sardine oils, which are part of most fish feeds used in
aquaculture today. The blue crab research program has used hatchery-reared
crabs to make many new discoveries about crab reproduction, growth, and
behavior in the Bay. This will lead to better management of this crucial
local resource.
