Bi-directional prepayment meter

Overview
This project aims to allow customers to enter credit into a prepayment meter at any time. It requires robust and reliable power line communication between customer interface device, the meter installed in street furniture and concentrators connected via GPRS to backend systems.
In 2012, the City of Cape Town initiated a domestic smart prepayment metering pilot project to establish technical equipment standards, associated, equipment certification requirements and equipment installation testing and hand over requirements and procedures. Participants were allowed to generate energy by means of their photovoltaic small scale embedded generation to establish a metering solution to accommodate bi-directional metering for residential applications in a prepayment environment. The project also involved an effort to allow two-way communication between the utility provider and consumers.
