Charles Shultz Home (30 North Mountain Avenue)
Overview
Charles Shultz and his wife Lucy M. Budd built their home on the corner of Claremont Avenue and North Mountain Avenue in 1896. The three-story Victorian house, which has 21 rooms, is strategically built in the southwest corner of the property to attain the highest land for the best view of New York City. Its abundance of evergreen trees on the property is reason for its nickname, "Evergreens." After three generations of being passed down, the home was bequeathed to the Montclair Historical Society by Molly Shultz, also a member, in 1997. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979 as well as on the State Register of Historic Places since 1978. Unlike other examples of late nineteenth century residences in Montclair, Evergreens retains nearly all of its original architectural detail, furnishings, and mechanical systems.
