A. J. Varno House (387 Park Street)
Overview
This ornate country residence was originally owned by A. J. Varno, a prominent resident of Upper Montclair. A. J. Varno was the President of the Montclair Fire Relief Association (1894), Treasurer of the Cliffside Hose Co. #4 when it first incorporated on February 5, 1889, and a vestryman for the St. James Episcopal Church when it was newly formed in 1888. The house is probably the best example locally of the Eastlake style. Although it has been altered through the years, many of the original architectural details remain. When the notice of the
building permits was published in "The Montclair Times", the paper decried the fact that more fine houses of this size were not being built in Upper Montclair. The new Varno house would be of the "Swiss Chalet Style."
This historic house, built in 1890 in the Eastlake variant of the Queen Anne style, is listed on the State Register of Historic Places.
