Mountain View Middle School Demonstration Rain Garden
Overview
History:
The Mountain View Middle School rain garden was installed to serve as a demonstration rain garden to educate students, homeowners, business owners and government facilities on how rain gardens can minimize impacts to nearby waterways.
Type of Runoff Managed:
This rain garden manages stormwater from the courtyard area of the Mountain View Middle School's. The courtyard is mostly lawn but generates runoff due to its slope. The rain garden is situated at the lowest elevation of the slope to capture runoff before it is discharged into the parking lot further downslope.
Installation:
Raritan Highlands Compact members were present for the installation of the rain garden in Fall 2007. Funding for this project was provided by Pfizer, the Leavens Foundation, New Jersey Corporate Wetland Resoration Partnership, Morris County Utilities Authority, and the Garden Club of Somerset Hills.
Plant List:
Black Eyed Susan
Blue Mist Flower
Inkberry Holly
Iris
Red Osier Dogwood
Swamp Rose
Maintenance:
The rain garden is maintained by students and teachers of the Mountainview Middle School and members of the Raritan Highlands Compact. Students and teachers have expanded upon the initial rain garden by installing additional plants and signs. Additional gardens were installed in the surrounding areas of the rain garden.
