The Civil War memorial marker located near the Ocracoke Ferry terminal (on the South side of Ocracoke) has a dual purpose. One side of the marker lists the names and units of the service men from Ocracoke and Portsmouth who fought in the Civil War. The other side of the Memorial describes Fort Ocracoke; the remnants of the fort are located underwater in Ocracoke inlet. The Confederate fort was built in 1861 just after North Carolina seceded from the Union.
