Culverhouse Community Garden
Overview
Gardeners at Culverhouse Community Garden use solar power to raise water from a well. Culverhouse is one of the of the largest community gardens in Florida and its 65 members work together to grow organic food for members. Some members give extra produce to All Faiths Food Bank. Though summer rains can bring flooded plots during the rainy season, members have enjoyed good harvests in Sarasota's three growing seasons.
Community gardens provide a place for individuals to raise vegetables, fruits and herbs, even if there is not enough space or soil nearby your home. Gardeners can improve their families’ health and nutrition while reducing food costs. Community gardens also benefit the neighborhoods where they are located by utilizing open space and promoting a sense of community pride.
