Doctors Hospital of Sarasota

Overview

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota is a 168-bed acute and general care facility serving Sarasota and Manatee counties. Using the Green Business Partnership application as its environmental program model, Doctors Hospital has formed a Green Team comprised of a cross-section of staff members. Its environmental program has already reduced the hospital’s environmental impacts with installation of rain sensors on outdoor sprinklers, the conversion of employee records to electronic storage, the removal of excess fluorescent bulbs, and the switch to a pest control company that practices green pest control. The hospital’s new Linen Conservation Initiative program has already saved more than 50,000 kWh of electricity, 10,000 gallons of water and $56,000 in operating costs. Doctors Hospital has integrated environmental stewardship into all facets of its operations, including administration, maintenance and patient care.

Doctors Hospital of Sarasota became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2009. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County.
