Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, an 806-bed regional medical center, is among the largest public health systems in Florida. With about 4,000 staff, 802 physicians and 1,000 volunteers, it is one of Sarasota County's largest employers. Sarasota Memorial is a full-service health system, with specialized expertise in heart, vascular, cancer, and neuroscience services, as well as a network of outpatient centers, long-term care and rehabilitation among its many programs. Today, it remains the only hospital in southwest Florida with superior clinical outcomes that consistently place it among HealthGrades’ “America’s 50 Best Hospitals.” Sarasota Memorial also has received the independent health care ratings organization’s highest honor for patient safety – the Patient Safety Excellence Award™. Of approximately 5,000 hospitals in the nation, Sarasota Memorial is one of only 5 hospitals to achieve both awards 6 years in a row.

Sarasota Memorial Hospital became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2007. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County. ENERGY STAR Medical Office. Did you know that a building or manufacturing plant can earn the ENERGY STAR label just like your refrigerator? An ENERGY STAR-qualified facility meets strict energy performance standards set by EPA, and uses less energy, is less expensive to operate, and causes fewer greenhouse gas emissions than its peers. The hospital earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Energy Star certification in 2012, signifying that the organization performs in the top 25 percent of similar facilities nationwide for energy efficiency and meets strict energy performance levels set by the EPA. At the time of certification, they were the only hospital in Southwest Florida to earn the certification. Sarasota Memorial reduced total energy costs by nearly $300,000 a year through a variety of initiatives, including replacing more than 10,000 bulbs with efficient fluorescent lighting and upgrading corridor lights to LED lights. Exterior lighting was upgraded to LED lighting, further conserving electricity.
