1989 m. Prancūzijos nacionalinio geografijos instituto mokslininkai nustatė Europos žemyno geografinio centro vietą pagal naujus nustatytus kontinento ribų taškus. Naudodami gravitacijos centrų metodą jie nustatė, kad Europos geografinis centras yra 54 laipsniai 54 minutės šiaurės platumos ir 25 laipsniai 19 minučių rytų ilgumos. Šito taško tiksli vieta yra Lietuvoje, 26 km į šiaurę nuo Vilniaus, prie Purnuškių kaimo. Ūkio ministerijos Valstybinis turizmo departamentas ir kitos Lietuvos administracinės įstaigos parėmė geografinio centro turistinį paženklinimo projektą. 1997 m. gegužės 24 d. už 25 km į šiaurę nuo Vilniaus, tarp Purnuškių ir Bernotų kaimų atidengtas Europos geografinė centrą žymintis akmuo. 2004 m. skulptoriaus Gedimino Jokūbonio sukurtas paminklas buvo pastatytas Europos geografinio centro vietoje. Paminklas - balto granito kolona su žvaigždžių karūna viršūnėje. Teritorija aplinkui geografinį centrą 1992 m. buvo pažymėta kaip draustinis. Šiam draustiniui priklauso Girijos ežeras, Bernotų piliakalnis, alkakalnis, gretimas miškas ir kitos vietovės.
2004 m. Prancūzijos nacionalinio geografijos instituto mokslininkai patikslino Europos geografinio centro koordinates. Jis atsidūrė netoli Pašilių kaimo, šiauriau Vilniaus. /
In 1989 French National Geographic Institute scientists have identified the geographical center of the continent to the new location outside the continental points. With the center of gravity method, they found that the geographic center is 54 degrees 54 minutes north latitude and 25 degrees 19 minutes east longitude. This point the exact location in Lithuania, 26 km north of Vilnius, the Purnuškių village. Ministry of Economy, State Tourism Department of Lithuania and other administrative agencies supported by marking the geographical center of a tourist project. In 1997. 24 May. 25 km north of Vilnius, and the Purnuškių Bernotai unveiled in the village marks the geographical center of the stone. In 2004 created by the sculptor Gediminas Jokūbonis monument was built in the geographical center of the spot. The monument - a white granite column with a crown of stars on top. The area around the geographic center in 1992 was selected as the Reserve. This reserve of Girija Lake, Bernotai mound shrine hill, forest and other adjacent areas.
