Singakwenza, which means “We can do it” is a Non-Profit, Public Benefit Organisation providing Primary Health Care and Early Childhood Education primarily to rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

Singakwenza Education and Health aims to provide low cost, high impact Education and Health through empowerment programmes to economically disadvantaged communities, particularly in rural areas of KwaZulu Natal. This is done through:

A sustainable Early Childhood Development mentorship programme for Caregivers at economically disadvantaged creches using recycling to make resources.
Waste2Toys workshops, teaching parents, caregivers and teachers of young children about the importance of play and how to make their own toys from recycling.
An HIV intervention programme based on a Peer Education model for rural workers, particularly in the Agricultural and Forestry sectors.
Mobile Clinic services providing Primary Health Care and counselling for rural workers and their families.

The Early Childhood Development programme empowers local crèche owners with the skills to stimulate and educate the neglected generation of children between the ages of 1 and 5 years. This is achieved using materials usually destined for our landfills, such as plastic bread bags, milk bottles, polystyrene trays, and others, to create toys and teaching tools. The education intervention was designed by Julie Hay who joined Singakwenza in 2010. Julie recognised a need for quality education for young children in previously disadvantaged areas, but was very aware that resources and training require vasts amounts of funding. She therefore began combining her past experience and research, and designed an empowering and practical Early Childhood Development(ECD) programme for children aged 1 to 5, based on the teaching aids made from recycled materials.

In this way, the educators will only need to purchase a pair of sharp scissors and a marker pen, and will be able to make their own teaching aids using materials that are freely available. However, many of the educators are unaware of why it is so important for children of this age to be provided with stimulation and education, so she is now training trainers to work with the educators in their classrooms to teach the how and the why behind each activity. The focus of the programme is to provide children with a solid educational foundation that will equip them with the necessary skills to succeed in the school system which will help them to make good choices for their future.
