271 Sea Street

On November 7, 2006, the residents of Quincy voted to adopt the Community Preservation Act (CPA), a steady funding source for three important community concerns — the preservation of land for open space, the restoration of historic sites, and the creation of affordable housing.

This lovely 3.5-acre site, referred to by many as 271 Sea Street, was one of the first parcels to be purchased by the city and preserved as open space using CPA funds. The site, in the Merrymount neighborhood, is covered by trees ranging from scrub oaks to mature hardwoods, and by a thick undergrowth of shrubs and briars. Wildlife on the site includes foxes, rabbits, and a variety of birds, including peregrine falcons. The parcel backs up into the 80-acre Broad Meadows Marsh, which the Army Corps of Engineers is about to restore and turn into a beautiful park for passive recreation.

The success of the CPA campaign was the result of a volunteer effort by members of the Quincy Environmental Network (www.qenet.org) who worked tirelessly to get the measure on the ballot and successively passed in all 30 precincts.

Site History:

This site was zoned open space in June 2001, but a development proposal predated that declaration, and was, therefore, grandfathered. The proposal called for single and multi-family units on the site and had all necessary permits needed to move forward. The proposal would have exacerbated an already dangerous traffic situation in a bend in Sea St near Grumpy Whites and was strongly opposed by the neighborhood.
