In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy devastated New York City’s shorelines with catastrophic flooding and server winds. Subways were flooded, bridges were shut down and power was lost. Early calculations have estimated that the hurricane caused at least $20 billion USD of damage and over $50 billion USD loss in business revenue. New York City received a wake up call from Superstorm Sandy that climate change will directly affect sea levels in New York Bay. Governor Andrew Cuomo asserted “Climate change is a reality. Given the frequency of these extreme weather situations we have had, for us to sit here today and say this is a once-in-a-generation [storm] and it’s not going to happen again, I think would b shortsighted.” Moving forward, the city can learn from the storm’s surge extent in preparing for the future infrastructure measures.
